HDPE plastic and its ranking in the recycling world

HDPE, or in its full name High-Density Polyethylene, is classified as a level 2 plastic. This classification comes from a plastic identification code system defined by the American Society for the Plastics Industry. This system uses triangular symbols with numbers in them to make it easier to identify the different types of plastic for recycling. The numbers from 1 to 7 indicate the different types of plastic:

  1. **PET** (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
  2. **HDPE** (High-Density Polyethylene)
  3. **PVC** (Polyvinyl Chloride)
  4. **LDPE** (Low-Density Polyethylene)
  5. **PP** (Polypropylene)
  6. **PS** (Polystyrene)
  7. **Other** (other types of plastic not included in the previous classifications)

HDPE is classified as level 2 because of its unique properties, such as:

- **High density:** HDPE is characterized by a higher density compared to other plastics, which makes it stronger and more durable.

- **Resistance to chemicals and weather conditions:** HDPE is resistant to many chemicals and does not wear out easily in outdoor conditions.

- **Easy to recycle:** HDPE can be easily recycled and thus contributes to the reduction of environmental waste.

The number 2 in the recycling symbol on HDPE products allows the sorters at the recycling plants and consumers to know that it is HDPE plastic, and to make sure that the product is recycled in the correct way.
